"Re° Light: A Collection of Popular Illustrators" is a collection of illustrations by the Japanese illustrator "Re° (Redo)".

Continuing the minimalist layout style of the "Selected Popular Illustrators' Portfolio" series, this time the cover uses a smooth material, while the inner cover is a solid gold color.

The content includes approximately 100 illustrations by Re°, covering personal creations and commercial illustrations.

The book concludes with the drawing process of two works, some drafts and brief comments, as well as a personal interview with the author.

Re°'s works possess a surreal atmosphere, with a series of mysterious figures whose faces are rarely shown, paired with simple yet exquisite elements (wings, flowers, etc.). The composition of the paintings resembles close-ups of young boys captured by a camera. 📷

【Excerpt from Interview】

Q1. How did you spend your childhood or school years?

As a child, I often doodled on paper. I would use the white back of photocopy paper or advertising paper to copy the cartoon characters or animals from picture books I often watched at the time. I drew frequently until junior high school, and then became obsessed with novels in junior and senior high school. However, more than the content of the book, my criteria for choosing a book were whether the title or the cover design was attractive to me... Looking back now, perhaps this period can vaguely foreshadow the work I do now.

I can hardly recall when I started drawing... I just started drawing without even realizing it. If I remember correctly, I've loved drawing since kindergarten or first grade. I always looked forward to art and craft classes back then.

Q2. If you had any particular favorite genres during your childhood or school years, please tell us.

I've always loved manga. I read all kinds, from shoujo manga to shonen manga. My favorite is "Dream Master" (by Hiroyuki Asada), which I read in junior high school. I not only loved the story, but I also loved the artist's style. The art book "Hone no Hinata" that I bought with my allowance in junior high is still a treasure to this day.

Q3. How did you learn to draw?

I haven't received any formal art education. Although I had a vague idea of "hoping to go to an art university...", I ultimately chose a university with an art academy, not an art university. Although I took painting and design courses in university, I never learned sketching or design from the basics. If I had to say, I've been learning "painting" until now.

Q4. Please talk about how you got into painting.

I hoped to work in painting or design in the future, so when I went to university, I bought a drawing tablet and uploaded my work to the internet (mainly pixiv). A publisher who saw my work commissioned me to design the cover for a novel, which was my first job. The chairman of my current company also contacted me after seeing my work on pixiv.

Q5. When do you get inspiration for your illustrations?

When I come into contact with a certain "hobby," whether it's hearing a song that's captivating from the very first note, being engrossed in a scene from a movie or play, visiting an art museum, sipping tea and daydreaming, or gazing out the window on a tram, an unexpected "hobby" can suddenly spark my inspiration.

Q6. What do you usually pay attention to in order to help you conceive and depict your work?

It's less about paying attention and more about subconsciously observing the interplay of light and shadow. On particularly sunny days, I observe the edges of the light hitting my skin or the colors reflected; on windy days, I observe what kind of wind makes clothes or hair flutter; I also observe passersby on the street or my reflection in glass. Sometimes I get inspiration from movies, art, or music, but I don't actively seek them out. As for museums or exhibitions, I almost always visit them because I see them advertised on trams or happen to see flyers on my way to the museum. With music, I search for songs I like online, which leads to other recommendations and introductions to different works… Even without specifically looking for anything, I can stumble upon things I like in everyday life. I don't think this is thanks to today's internet society; it seems like it's been like this since I was a child.
