This collection of graphic novels originated from the 2015 Taipei International Book Fair (New Zealand was the theme country that year), which launched a graphic creation activity to allow creators from Taiwan and New Zealand to exchange ideas! This book showcases the results of "gifts" exchanged between three creators from Taiwan and three from New Zealand, and is a collection of 18 graphic novels.
The translucent book jacket reads: "Books are the best gift!" and "One book, two islands, six authors, eighteen touching gifts." The six creators are: Tim Gibson, Rachel Fenton, Ant Sang, Sean Chuang, 61Chi, and Ahn Zhe.

The book's art design was handled by 61Chi, featuring three creators from Taiwan represented by the Formosan macaque and three creators from New Zealand represented by the kiwi 🥝. The title pages at the beginning and end of the book also feature dense patterns of these two animals—very cute!

All text in the book is presented in two languages (Chinese and English), and some works are completely textless.
Each creator created works based on the themes and inspirations that arose after the exchange, showcasing the unique styles and characteristics of their respective works!

Official Introduction
Six cartoonists from two islands create a wonderful gift for their friends!
Cartoonists from Taiwan and New Zealand, separated by opposite Pacific Oceans.
Here, the warmest sparks of friendship are ignited.
What interesting conversations did these six foreign cartoonists have after meeting for the first time, spending a week in a foreign land together?
It's rare that this story wasn't created for readers or for myself; it was a story created to give a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a foreign friend as an intimate gift. It shows how they share their life experiences, finding inspiration in each other—both strangers and close friends—deepening their understanding of one another's life.
This gift, "Gift from Islands – A Taiwanese-New York Graphic Novel Collection Project," is a vow of commitment to the relationship.
A total of 18 short comics, drawing the viewer in and offering glimpses into the cartoonists' most relatable and authentic emotions. 61Chi's childhood pet, Angelopoulos's landscape gaze, Xiao Zhuang's beloved family, Ant's fifth-generation Chinese fantasy, Rachel's poetic sensibilities, Tim's passion for alcohol... all are captured here.
[On the Island Gaze – A Collaborative Creative Project Between Taiwanese and New Zealand Writers]
Three graphic novelists were selected from Taiwan and New Zealand respectively. In October 2014, the Taiwanese graphic novelist went to Auckland for a residency, where he exchanged ideas and created works with the New Zealand graphic novelist. The second phase of the program took place in Taipei in February 2015, where the three New Zealand graphic novelists came to Taiwan for a residency and exhibited their records of the exchange and initial ideas for their works at the Taipei International Book Exhibition.
"Islands Looking at Each Other - Taiwan-New Zealand Writers Collaboration Project" is a preliminary work for in-depth cultural exchange between Taiwan and New Zealand. During their residency, the six authors came up with the creative theme of "gift" and gave their comics as gifts to each other.
Story Outline
In Auckland in October 2014 and in Taipei in February 2015.
Three cartoonists from each of the two island nations of Taiwan and New Zealand were selected to exchange residencies. Six cartoonists with distinct styles share their friendship stories in each other's countries! This book is a collection of eighteen short stories, a "gift" exchanged between the six authors to their friends in other countries—a token of their friendship.
The theme might be sharing life experiences, something interesting about the other person, or insights gained from being in a different place—it could be a connection between everyday life and imaginative possibilities. Let's board Waka, created by a cartoonist, and sail across the ocean to another island to make friends with them.
"I want to exchange gifts with you..." so that our fate can extend across the ocean.
Taiwan and New Zealand are two islands, separated by thousands of miles across the diagonal of the South Pacific Ocean.
Six cartoonists created illustrations to erase the distances marked on the map.
They went to different places, visiting each other's countries and asking each other, "What are you interested in?"“
After parting, they exchanged tokens of their affection.
Or rather, those keepsakes that serve as a memento of this once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
This book has become a poetic and heartfelt confession between countries and islands.
