=Author's Note=

There are nearly thirty Pokémon plush toys in our studio, always hanging in mid-air, watching us draw from behind. These toys were hand-sewn by our grandmother when we were ten years old. We loved Pokémon back then.

For those of us born in 1989 (the first year of the Heisei era), Pokémon is synonymous with "childhood." After the release of the Game Boy games Pokémon Red and Green in 1996, along with the anime and various merchandise, Pokémon gradually became a social phenomenon. At that time, we were ten-year-old children, the same age as the anime's protagonist, Ash Ketchum. Whenever I think of Pokémon, scenes from those days come to mind—the roads we walked to and from school, the voices of our friends, the smell of grass, our secret hideouts in the forest, the glistening beads of sweat on our foreheads, the heavy rain clouds.

For us as children, the line between the real world and the fantastical world of Pokémon was blurred. We would imagine the butterflies in the park as Butterfree and try to catch them with a net. The world seemed vast, dreamlike, and beautiful as it was created through the interplay of our mental and emotional processing of images and reality. For adults, who have accumulated knowledge and experience and lost their capacity for imagination, those were precious moments that are hard to recapture. When creating *Pokémon Island*, we placed great emphasis on this feeling of "childhood." One of the sources of our creative motivation was Pokémon itself.

📍 About the Author

The Cabin Company

A duo of picture book creators, Kentaro Abe and Saki Yoshioka. Born in Oita Prefecture, Japan, they graduated from the Faculty of Education and Welfare Sciences at Oita University.

Using a studio converted from an abandoned school as their creative base, they employ diverse forms of expression such as picture books, 3D modeling, and animation to create a unique worldview. They have won the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award, the Japan JRAC Parent-Child Picture Book Award, and the German White Raven Award and the Japan Picture Book Award for their work "It's Too Late for School!", making them prominent emerging picture book creators in Japan.
