The 2020 Bologna Children's Book Fair received 12,870 works from 2,574 artists in 66 countries. The judging panel consisted of five authorities in the fields of illustration and picture books: Valérie Cousague (France) and Machiko Wakatsuki (Japan), both renowned publishers in their respective countries; Lorenzo Matotti (Italy), an internationally acclaimed illustrator; Cathy Omidydias (UK), founder and art director of a teen magazine; and Enrico Fornaroli (Italy), a scholar in the field of illustration.

The jury's report brilliantly described the implications of facing such a large number of works, tracing the initial doubts to the gradually formed selection criteria. Finally, after collective deliberation, the jury determined the direction of selection: to ensure that the selected works "represent multiple styles, different cultural and geographical expressions, and strive to convey the diversity and trends of contemporary illustration, rather than developing in a single direction." This was an urgent task: to create a long mural that was as varied and representative as possible to reflect the content offered by the world of children's illustration today.

This selection certainly aligns with the commitment to regional and cultural diversity: the 76 selected artists come from 24 different countries and regions: Italy, France, South Korea, Japan, Argentina, China, Poland, Spain, Lithuania, Hong Kong, Germany, Finland, Taiwan, Chile, Russia, Netherlands, Uruguay, Iran, the United States, Czech Republic, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Peru.
