I didn't expect to see cheap second-hand books (out of print) on Shopee after many years (?), and in order to open the box, I specially reviewed the comics and animations of "The Strange Classmate Next Door" (available on Netflix!).

When I watch this work again, I don’t feel emotionally trapped in the first time. I don’t know if it’s because I know the plot, or I’m out of the innocent age of high school? (I will always want to complain 🤣) In addition to the style of painting (the original illustration and animation style are both), the chicken Nagoya in the work has a strong sense of existence, and there are many parts that make people laugh and move. It is one of my favorite youth campus works!

A very textured hardcover art book, the colorful cover and the inside cover are very "strange classmate next door" style, and the cover and the title on the side of the book are partially varnished. The waist of the book is made of matte material, and there are some small illustrations; the butterfly page is very special, it is a whole page made up of many illustrations, the front of the book is all yellow, and the end of the book is all blue (below).

This book is a real picture book specification, not like a small set of formulas in the form of comics. The included images are very rich. I like Robico's light watercolor coloring method (you can see the obvious rendering effect). In the early illustrations, you can see the borderless style of color blocks. She is also one of the few cartoonists who I think has also played a good role in the Q version of the character illustrations.

At the end of the book, there is a detailed description of Robico's process of drawing the cover of this book (it's really as detailed as 5 pages), and even put her two dogs (laughing mice) in the icon list of creative tools.

Recently, I also watched "Hori and Miyamura" which just finished the animation a while ago. These two works were the works that hit me very much at that time (Kuni III). A careful analysis of "The Neighbor" and "Hori and Miyamura" can be seen very comfortably (?) The reason should be that the hero and heroine settings are very pleasing to the eye: the heroine is smart and capable (it just so happens that the two anime heroines are both seiyuu Song Haruka) and not a typical male protagonist, the friends around him are also very sincere and have a clear story line (the male two are very good). It is also a point that some heroines and heroines in love are very straightforward and not sloppy~

To be honest, the animation production of these two comics is almost 10 years apart. The whole flavor is different when I look back on it, but they are both great works!

"The Strange Classmate Next Door", which began serialization in 2008, was adapted into an animation in 2012 and a movie in 2018, which was released in Japan on April 27. All 13 episodes of manga finally released an illustration set this year.
